First licensed in 1973 as GW8FXM, my first QSO's were on 2
Meters using a borrowed Heathkit "Twoer". This was a crystal
controlled rig with super regen receiver. It was very sensitive but wide open at
the front end. That wasn't a problem in those days where the common practice was
to tune the band from one end to the other after each CQ in the hope of finding
someone else who was also crystal controlled who was replying. I quickly
purchased an ex PMR base station, a Marconi T18 and established 144.380 as my
own frequency (I only had one crystal!). Aided by a friendly local Amateur TV
expert, I became interested in ATV and gained the call GW6AJR/T (the G6 prefix
was exclusive to ATV in those days.
Main interests these days is Six Metres and I am currently the
secretary to the UK Six Metre Group (UKSMG).
Other interests are WSJT and JT44 operation and all forms of datacoms. Also have
a passion for HF operation and intend to bite the bullet and take the CW test as
soon as possible.
